Hit and Run Driver Snitched On by Her Whistle Blowing Car!
A woman in Florida might have got away with a double hit and run incident if it wasn’t for the honesty of her trusty Ford Focus which, to her great surprise, decided to rat her out. Obviously disgusted by it’s owner’s behaviour in disappearing off down the road without stopping, the car called 911 and informed the police on her!
Cathy Bernstein had been driving her Focus in Port St. Lucie, Florida when she was allegedly involved in a collision with a Ford truck. Rather than stopping and swapping details it appears she decided to do a runner and sped off down the road. She wouldn’t be the first person to do this and certainly won’t be the last.
Unfortunately for Cathy, she apparently then rear ended a Dodge minivan being driven by Anne Preston and drove off yet again. Even more unfortunately for Cathy, her car was fitted with Sync Emergency Assistance technology which automatically calls the emergency services in the event of an accident.
So while the police are investigating the first incident, Cathy is shocked to end up on the receiving end of a phone call with a 911 dispatcher. Part of the recording has been released by officials.
“This is 911, you’ve been involved in an accident?”
“Ma’am, there was no problem, everything was fine.”
“OK. But your car called in saying you’d been involved in an accident. It doesn’t do that for no reason. Did you leave the scene of an accident?”
“No, I would never do that.”
This dispatcher, who isn’t convinced, obviously knows her stuff. Police put 2 and 2 together and realise that the the hit and runs may be connected. On taking take a trip to Cathy’s house they find her Ford Focus with a damaged front end and somewhat sad looking, deflated airbags dangling down from the dashboard, looking for all the world like leftover party balloons. When quizzed about the damage Cathy is alleged to have changed her story and claimed that she hit a tree. Paint found on her vehicle which had been scraped from the other cars during the hit and run collisions rather knocked that excuse on the head.
Cathy was duly arrested and after treatment in hospital for minor injuries was carted of to St Lucie County Jail. It just goes to show that you can’t trust anyone or anything to keep quiet these days not even your own car!
