Discovering South America
In some ways South America seems as remote and unknown as anywhere on Earth. It stretches from north of the equator almost down to Antarctica and the vast Amazon rain forest alone covers an area of over 2 million square miles. It has endless tales of explorers heading off into the jungle in search of gold and lost cities, many never to be seen again.
South America has a population of around 420 million and over half the population is Brazilian. The main languages spoken are Spanish and Portuguese, reflecting the continent’s colonial history.
The largest dinosaur found to date, Argentinosaurus huinculensis, was discovered in Argentina in 1987. It lived around 95 million years ago is estimated to have been about 30 35 metres in length and weighed about 100 tons.
The first humans arrived in South America at least 15,000 years ago. Several civilisations developed on the continent over the course of many centuries, the most famous one being the Inca civilisation, which was ultimately destroyed by the Spanish conquistadors who arrived in Inca territory in 1526.
The later and more recent history has also been quite difficult, with military dictatorships taking over several countries, along with revolutions and guerrilla wars and ongoing problems of the drug cartels, the go to bad guys for so many Hollywood movies. That said, it is one of the most amazing parts of the world, with a wealth of tourist destinations and incredible things to see and do!
