The Giant Artistic Genius of Florentijn Hofman
Florentijn Hofman is a Dutch artist with big ideas. And with installations such as Moonrabbit, HippopoThames, Steelman or even a gargantuan Aardvark wearing a party hat, he also does big art to match!
Born in Delfzijl, Netherlands, Hofman produces enormous temporary art installations which show an even more enormous sense of fun. He has been commissioned to install his art all over the world and puts a lot of time and effort into understanding the local people and customs to produce something unique which is reflective of them. Britain for example was treated to a large floating hippopotamus which was towed around on the River Thames in London.
For Rotterdam Hofman design and installed a set of five colourful paper origami style boats, although made of rather more robust metal obviously.
Taiwan has the 80ft Moon Rabbit leaning against a military bunker and gazing up at the sky. Or rather it did have Moon Rabbit until it caught fire.
Hi most famous artwork is Rubber Duck though. This incredible bath time favourite has appeared in many countries all over the world and is by far and away his most eye catching a popular piece of work so far.
“My sculptures cause an uproar, astonishment and put a smile on your face. They give people a break from their daily routines. Passers-by stop in front of them, get off their bicycle and enter into conversation with other spectators. People are making contact with each other again. That is the effect of my sculptures in the public domain.”Florentijn Hofman
We think Mr Hofman is right on all counts, especially putting a smile on peoples faces! If you would like to learn more about the artistic genius of Florentijn Hofman take a look at his website: http://www.florentijnhofman.nl
