The Weird Kit Kat Flavours Found in Japan
To an outsider, and one suspect to many insiders, Japan is a curious and baffling place at times. We would never have suspected that you could extend this to a truly curious and baffling array of oddball Kit Kat flavours. But in Japan they’re not happy to settle for a milk chocolate covered wafer biscuit like the rest of us, on no! They’ve got hooked on flavours big time!
There are over 300 different flavoured Kit Kats which have been produced since its introduction to Japan in in 1973 (as far as we know Britain has had three: milk chocolate, dark chocolate and white chocolate. Some are fairly harmless sounding, for example you wouldn’t be too shocked to come across banana, apple, cherry or even chestnut or cinnamon cookie would you? But after this it does start to get a little weird, here are a few examples:
- Baked Potato (how is this even a flavour, it’s a potato!)
- Ginger Ale
- European Cheese (the yellow plastic variety maybe)
- Melon and Cheese
- Butter (to go on the potato?)
- Bakeable Custard (we have no idea)
- Vegetable Juice
- Red Potato (unbaked…raw…who knows?)
- Corn (hopefully not scraped from feet)
- Royal Milk Tea
- Muscat of Alexandria (unless it’s supposed to be muskrat)
Are any of these making you feel peckish at all? Please don’t lose site of the fact that we are still talking about Weird Kit Kat flavours here, it’s hard to imagine isn’t it! But at least you can understand what these ones are. When it comes to home grown Japanese flavours you’re into a whole new world of oddity:
- Kuchidoke Kakao
These could be anything. For all we know these could range from grandmother’s kidney to dog saliva flavoured Kit Kats.
Could you imagine buying yourself an interesting looking Kit Kat while on holiday and being pleased at the look of delight on the shopkeeper’s face? What you don’t realise is that you’ve just made his day because he was starting to despair of ever shifting the racoon’s urine flavoured ones.
So if you ever get to go to Japan on holiday or business, track down a few of the weird Kit Kat flavours to be found there and let us know what you think.
Oh, we nearly forgot the obvious one, of course they also do Sushi flavour!
