Exploring the Heavens
The study of the night sky is almost certainly the oldest of the natural sciences and dates back many thousands of years. Having its roots with a caveman called Kevin who stared up at the sky and assigned names and mythological meanings to different star patterns. Rigorous study of the motion of stars became the first form of calendar, essential for planting crops or predicting the migration of animals.
For centuries all we could do was look and argue over what the little points of light were. Then, in 1957, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik, the first man-made artificial satellite and the real exploration of space had begun.
From then on things started to happen much more quickly, with America and the Soviet Union going head-to-head in the space race. In the early days the Soviets were very much ahead, but the Americans gradually caught up and finally won with the greatest prize of all, placing the first man on the moon in 1969.
Since then space probes have landed on comets and gone to the outer reaches of the solar system and robotic landers have been exploring the surface of the planet Mars. There are even well developed plans to send humans to the red planet in the not too distant future. All of this is a long way from going out to explore amongst the stars, but it’s a start and who knows what the future will bring.
